Our friends call us "the loud family," and so we're loud and we're rambunctious and we laugh a lot and the girls had that much energy and it kind of bonded us.
What would you like to drink?
We have everything, we have water, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite...
Meanwhile in Goshen, Oregon, Troy is also getting acquainted with his cousin, Roberto.
Pleasure to meet you, cuz!
Roberto, he has a warm sense about him.
I can tell that he's just as excited about this process as I am.
I'm Roberto Ramirez.
I'm Sandra Ramirez.
Before I worked with lumber, I was a wild land firefighter for eight seasons.
Troy: This is a guy's guy.
He loves hunting, he loves the outdoors, he loves riding motorcycles and he immediately wanted to show me some of his skills and teach me how to shoot a bow.
Alright, Troy, this is what we're going to be shooting.
Alright.
I'm trusting you're going to be showing me what to do with this.
He's very patient and just walked me through it.
I'm grateful to be his cousin.
This is a big part of a life that I can share.
There you go, perfect.
Like that?
Yup.
And I'm thinking to myself, "Just don't break it, Troy, and just hit some part of the target."
Again, we're cousins.
I got this.
How'd I do?
A little to the right, low.
Try it again.
Okay.
You got it.
Perfect.
For never shooting a bow, he caught on and did really well.
That is vital.
So I would've technically killed my first deer?
Yeah.
On my second pull of the bow.
On the second shot.
[laughing] In Boise, Idaho, Rebecca reunites with a close relative who once was a very important part of her life while she was growing up.
Nice to meet you, Bud!
I could tell Bud was pretty happy.
I saw the same thing in his face that I saw in Kathy.
Wow.
This is your mom Karen and this is my brother, your Uncle Kenny, and this is my oldest son, Bud, your first cousin.
I'm Bud Blair.
And I'm Anna Blair.
I'm 36, I work in manufacturing, and I'm Rebecca's first cousin.
Rebecca: He was happy to have us... home.
John: After we met Bud and Anna and their daughter, Naomi, they invited us into the house and we kind of looked at a few pictures and Anna had food that she got prepared for us and Rebecca and Bud got a chance to talk.
I never thought we'd be doing this, I'll tell you what.
We were always hopeful, always hopeful.
In Andrews, North Carolina, Michael and Dylan have made another important discovery.
Hi Michael.
I'm Ronnie, your brother.
I got a brother.
I didn't have one when I started the day.
I wanna hear everything.
You will, I promise.
So good to meet you.
Nice to meet you too.
This is my son.
There's no words that can really convey what I want to say about it.
This is my wife, Sherry.
I'm Michael.
Hello!
Nice to meet you.
I'm Ronnie.
I'm Sherry.
I work for Philips and Jordan Construction outfit.
We cut trees for the power company.
And then I got to introduce Michael to my wife and my two kids and it went good.
Michael: Coming into this, I had a puzzle with no pieces.
Now I'm having piece by piece by piece filling in the blanks I've always had.
It's not necessarily what happened back then-- we're here now.
Focus on the future.
Exactly.
We gotta build on the future and now I know I've got Michael and I'm going to build on it.
You like fishing?
I love fishing.
Well, we're fixing to go fishing.
I love to hear that.
Y'all have fun.
Thanks.
We're going fishing.
Back on the west coast, Troy gets to meet even more family.
Roberto: Troy, Nicole, this is my parents, Pedro and Barbara Ramirez.
Hi!
It's wonderful to meet you.
Pleasure to meet you.
We were fortunate enough to meet Roberto's parents.
His dad, Pedro, made homemade tacos which were some of the best tacos I've ever had.
These are finger-licking good.
Finger-lickin' good!
You know, last night we had three generations sitting at the table.
Tonight, we got two generations sitting at the table so that lineage, it's present.
It's not on paper, it's not on a website.
You can ask all the questions you want because they have the history right in their head.
It's all right there.
So last night I made-- met my first connection who really are tied into the Portugal heritage and they brought me up to speed on everything.
I feel like I'm getting closer and closer to who I really am and who my family really is.
Michael: I hate it's raining today but we'll still get good fishing.
Any day is a good day to fish.
So I'm with my niece, Maggie.
I decide to put my fishing rod down, hold the umbrella for her, and just try and help her.
Pull that back, now you just fling it out there.
Now we gotta do it fast, these are top feeders.
Well tomorrow, um, I'm actually heading west towards Houston to do some emergency food service so we're going to feed five or six hundred people in the community.
That's amazing that you're doing that.
We think it's inspiring to know that we have a cousin that's like going out and making the sacrifice, that he's serving the first responders.
I got something I'd like to show you guys.
Oh, okay!
Alright, cool.
Here, I tell you what, let's switch.
You hold the umbrella, let me try it.
Alright, so this is your Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate.
What?
I've never seen this.
Whoa.
I saw my name and I just-- I wasn't ready for that.
So here's your pie chart that breaks down based on the area.
I'm hanging out next to Uncle Ronnie and we're fishing, not catching anything, wondering what we're doing wrong and he finally gets something.
Got him, got him, got him, got him, got him, got him!
Ah, I need a basket.
We're going through the list and I cannot believe what I see.
What?
Are you serious?
We're 19 percent Irish.
I think that's the part we have in common.
That's it.
We discovered that we both have Irish ancestry.
That's awesome.
Wow, that's so crazy!
He got one.
Being able to share that with my niece and teach her just a couple things and to catch a fish with her, great.
Here we go.
Michael and my daughter was fishing and they outdone us; they caught one.
Picking it up, it got loose two or three times but we had fun.
We're going to take it home and eat it up.
You just caught dinner.
I know!
You never know what to expect but that's not a bad thing.
We immediately related.
That's the power of family, and if this experience is teaching me anything, it's just learning to embrace that more.
Back in Boise, Idaho, Rebecca remembers how she and her Cousin Bud are closely connected.
Bud: I do have short memories of you-- Oh, you do?
--from when I was a kid, and I just remember the whole thing growing up and just how hard it was to lose you.
So you remember it?
It's a little overwhelming in the good sense that we have family and they want us and they loved us and they've always wanted us.
Your mom showed us a picture of us playing on a playground.
That was like the last time we saw you, and the, like, the playground equipment and all the kids, I suddenly remembered that.
I remember that photograph being taken but that's the only moment that I remember of it because the memories were just, I don't know, buried, or lost.
When I was two years old, my mother, Karen Richards, fell down a flight of stairs and hit her head.
She went into a coma and a few days later she passed away.
My father, Charlie a few years later remarried a woman named Susan Neer.
One night she didn't come home from work.
The police showed up at the house and arrested my father for Susan Neer's murder.
My sister Ashley and I were adopted by my father's sister.
We went on to grow up into lives not knowing anything about our biological mother Karen's family.
I have had two mothers in my life that I don't know much about.
My father, Charlie, I don't know much about his family either because when he was arrested and we were adopted, we spent about two years bouncing between I believe different relative's homes, but I couldn't tell you who or where.
I was so young and the trauma made a lot of my memory very foggy.
Bud: I remember my mother trying to-- fighting for custody for you and your sister and ultimately ended up losing that custody battle.
It was a really hard time for our family.
So great to meet you again.
It is.
For me, the only thing I wanted to know was that-- that we were loved and we were wanted.
Over all the years, she has never been far from anybody's thoughts.
I just can't express enough how much this means to me as well as the rest of my family.
Rebecca: In the end, we finally found each other and I've learned so much about my mom.
She's no longer just the woman who gave birth to me.
She's not just this beautiful face in a photo.
She's actually somebody who has her own history and her own stories and we're getting to find that out.
Dylan: So I think we did okay today but I still can't help but to be a little nervous about what's about to come with Dan.
Just please don't get a strike.
I think we need to get through every day without getting a strike.
I don't want to miss out on anybody.
We may get one strike, we may even get two strikes, but I don't want to go home until I have seen every smiling face that greets us at every door.
Dan: Relative Race Day 2 is coming to a close.
Allotted and actual times are being calculated.
Who is one step closer to Day 10 and who will receive a strike?
Welcome, teams.
Day 2 of Relative Race is officially now in the books.
I'll bet ya you'd all like to know how you did.
[All agreeing] You are definitely in different scenarios.
In the case of two of the teams today, you had to overcome Mother Nature.
Team Green, you headed straight into what is already known as one of the most devastating hurricanes on record and yet you veered into that without danger to yourself but Mother Nature took a hit.
What happened?
Yeah, I have the best big sister driver in the world, that's what happened.
You can tell.
We just played it safe.
There were times when we had to slow down, there were times when we saw flooding, but somehow we miraculously made it.
We honestly just had to say like if we end up going too slow, that's okay because safety's first and so we just took our time and we made it through.
Troy, I know especially for you, this odyssey, this journey, this venture is a hope to find family but you guys did struggle today.
Troy: I let us down twice today and so hopefully we don't pay the price for that.
We'll find out soon if you were able to avoid a strike, but speaking of discoveries, Rebecca, you also have been searching for family your entire life.
I have.
Wanting to meet family, wanting to know who else is out there, but for you, those amazing discoveries happened again today.
Who did you meet?
I met my first cousin, Bud.
They have a beautiful daughter, Naomi, and tomorrow is her birthday.
This is Naomi and Bud and Anna.
Happy birthday!
Yes, happy birthday!
And for me, it's no longer lonely on my side of the tree.
I am two days into Relative Race and I have a family.
A big one.
It feels so good to say.
Oh, man, Relative Race.
Michael's nodding.
For you, Michael, you've been searching for family your entire life.
Yes.
You found your father.
Today share with us who you found.
Today I met my brother and his family.
I met his wife, I met my two nieces.
Troy: For Michael to meet his brother, that is-- that's close.
We can't imagine what it's like and we can see the joy and everything that they're experiencing and we're just really happy for them.
I have those questions and I have those voids too, and it's great to see everyone be able to fill in those blanks.
Sounds like amazing discoveries for you guys once again.
Well, we're about to find out if you were able to avoid a strike.
Finishing in first place, 22 minutes over their allotted time, apparently, you can even overcome hurricanes, because girls, you finished in first.
[all cheering] Are you serious?
No way!
It took me a second for it to register.
I was so excited I could not believe that we weren't third.
We were hoping for third place.
I know!
Like, we're fine with third.
You have a choice.
Do you choose an immediate game benefit which is to skip your city selfie tomorrow or do you choose a Day 10 game benefit which will only help you if you make it to Day 10?
We respect you so much but we're so scared of Team Black and they picked Day 10 so we're picking Day 10 just in case because we can't risk it.
He's so scary.
[laughing] Well congratulations.
Finishing in second place with a time of 43 minutes over your allotted time is Team Red.
[cheering] Oh my goodness.
Okay.
It was disbelief for me and such a relief.
I was grabbing Nicole and just like thankful that all the stuff that I screwed up on today didn't cost us a strike because I really felt like I let us down today.
I really did.
One minute separated the second-place team from the third-place team.
Who's another step closer to $50,000?
Finishing in third place is one heck of a father and son team, Team Blue.
[cheering] Come here.
Oh, yeah.
Woo!
And that means Team Black, you have received your first strike.
Rebecca: A little disheartening to get our first strike.
It was unfortunate but tomorrow is a new day and we're going full force.
Dan: Here are the official results for Day 2.
Team Green sisters Jamie and Morgan in first place, 22 minutes over their allotted time.
Team Red, Troy and Nicole, finish in second place 43 minutes over.
Team Blue, Michael and Dylan, are in third, 44 minutes over their allotted time, and receiving their first strike on Relative Race, Team Black, John and Rebecca, came in 1:03 over their allotted time.
All of you, you look like you had a wonderful day and one that has kind of tuckered you out.
Guess what?
You're only two days into the race.
[laughter] But that second day is officially over.
Get some rest.
Most importantly, enjoy your family.
This is what it's all about.
You guys are on an adventure of discovery that people all over the world could only hope for.
Go out, wake up refreshed, overcome those challenges, and find those families because Relative Race rolls on.
Day 3 is tomorrow morning.
Goodnight and good luck.
[all saying goodnight] [sigh] Oh my goodness gracious.
Yes!
Yes!
[laughter] Congratulations!
Oh my gosh.
I was not expecting that at all.
I was like "Third place, we got third place, we can do third place, just not a strike."
Well, I knew that was going to happen.
It's kind of a bummer.
Oh, thank you Naomi.
Oh, that makes it so much better.
Thank you, kiddo.
Yeah, let's head over to the couch.
I got something that might help cheer you up a bit.
I'd love that, thank you.
I wonder what the Day 10 benefit is going to be.
I don't know what it's going to be.
So we decided to go with the Day 10 benefit.
Well, this might help.
Oh, is this it?
Okay.
Is it like a necklace or something?
I don't know.
See-- Oh!
It's like a gold coin.
What's it say?
Washington, D.C. And this is what they gave us.
We have no idea what this coin could possibly mean.
I mean, it could mean nothing.
It could just be a remembering token of where we started this race but-- I'll take it.
Sounds good to me.
[all talking and laughing] I just keep looking forward to the fact that after all of this not only do we get to go home and see our family but we get to tell our family about the rest of our family and we all get to come together.
Good job, brother.
All right, thank you, brother.
Group hug!
Anna, my wife, has this creative way of creating scrapbooks.
Thank you.
We came in and sat down at the couch and they showed us a photo album that was unique.
Whoa.
That's Daddy and me.
[gasp] Whoa.
This is amazing!
You made this by hand?
Mmhm.
Thank you.
Do you have a bird?
Yeah, it's [indistinct] right there.
Naomi was kind enough to point out every picture and explain who everybody was and how they were important to her and important to me.
This is very special.
Thank you, honey.
Thank you.
Did you help too?
What did you help with?
I helped with the pictures.
Thank you.
I helped to be in them.
You helped to be in them?
[all laughing] That's the best part.
Getting to meet Bud and his wife, Anna and Naomi, it kind of makes the strike not really matter.
We're going to make it to Day 10.
There's no question.
That's why we're here.
As long as we make it to the end to meet them all, I'll be one happy girl.
We won first place tonight.
This is insane.
We are super excited for Day 3.
Can't wait to tackle whatever challenge is tomorrow.
We came in third.
We came in third.
That's cool.
I still hate zip lining.
I'll never do it again.
Okay, bye.
