I didn't know this when I started, but there are about 40,000 Africans studying in the U.S. any given year, and about a million international students overall, and that's a large part of the American fabric.
I hadnt seen a film that offered that meditation or reflection of experience of going abroad and trying to hold two worlds, maybe two identities, and blend them into one.
Our experiences have not been explored in cinema, and so I wanted to make a film that did that.
And so just like Toni Morrison says, “If there's a book you want to read that doesn't exist, go write it.” I set out to make a film that I wanted to see exist in the world that did not at that point.
