And I think it's really important that as we're writing the history of the COVID pandemic, that this is one of the stories thats recorded.
Communities are an important part of Fire Through Dry Grass because its our story and we were the ones that wanted to put the story out there for the whole country to see.
Really it's about his point of view, but we also have my point of view coming into the film.
And one of the things that we really lean into into this film is the inside-outside.
Jay and the other Reality Poets, you always see them behind a window, whether it's a Zoom window or behind the windows of the building, and I'm always filming from the outside.
We really tried to enhance that effect of what it sounded like and what it looked like from your point of view inside the nursing home to what it looked like for everyone else who was, the world was already opening up for the rest of us outside.
What I want for people to walk out with is the fact that they can fight for themselves, that don't let somebody just tell you how they want you to do or what they want you to act like, or what they want you to live like.
Fight for your rights.
Fight for what you believe in.
Its not just about this nursing home.
It's not just about Coler.
It's about nursing homes everywhere.
And it's about people everywhere who were forgotten during the pandemic and whose stories we didn't really see on the news.
