REPORTER: As federal and local officals continue to debate ICE raids of undocumented immigrants, a group of churches has stepped up to provide sanctuary to those in need.

In accordance with he National Sanctuary Collective about 50 families currently have relatives living in sanctuary.

ALISON: Until the deportations stop, we will use sanctuary as this act of resistance.

ANNE: Our faith is not meant for us to be comfortable.

It's meant to be liberating, which is hard and painful.

REPORTER: In North Carolina, ICE agents arrested a Mexican immigrant Friday after he emerged from the Durham church where he'd been living in sanctuary for nearly a year.

Samuel Oliver had gone to the ICE office in Raleigh to have his fingerprints taken so he could apply to remain with his wife and son in the US.

PROTESTOR: So why should anyone else come out of sanctuary if all you're gonna do is arrest them when they come out?

So we were very clear that they were prepared to arrest her on the spot.

Their reasoning is because she didn't appear today.

That's why they denied her stay.

She's on the phone, so she can hear us, and feel us and send her energy.

And I think we should hear from her now.

JEANETTE: Quiero decirles gracias a todos los que están ahí.

Now, after this launch, she is asking for that same leniency.

REPORTER: There is a large swath of people who do not sympathize with you, who think there shouldn't be anything routine about this that would like to see more vetting of people regardless of the circumstance.

JARED: Unless this deferral is granted, Janette might have to be here for months or years while she waits for legal status to come through.

Para mí, lo más importante es que mis hijos estén bien y que ellos sean felices, porque ya han sufrido mucho.

(school bell ringing) Soy de la Ciudad de México.

Yo vine aquí a Estados Unidos en el año 97 por seguridad.

El papá de mis hijos había sufrido tres secuestros exprés.

Desafortunadamente, me tocó a mí ser detenida por un policía.

Me preguntó que si estaba legal o ilegal en este país.

Estuve detenida entre policía e Inmigración 34 días.

Cuando uno como mamá es detenido, no está pensando: "¿Qué va a pasar conmigo?".

Uno está pensando en su casa, en los hijos, qué van a hacer los hijos sin su mamá.

Como toda persona, sí tengo miedo, pero también siento el deber moral de levantar mi voz como persona, como madre, como mujer, porque las mismas situaciones que estoy pasando yo lo están pasando miles de personas en la calle, y alguien tiene que ser la persona que está poniendo el dedo en ese problema.

And that leads me to Ingrid, our sanctuary guest.

Two weeks ago, she asked that the congregation be told her big news, she's pregnant!

(silence from congregation) KELLY: Yay!

And many people in the congregation have expressed their excitement about this news and some aren't so sure.

Several people have asked Ingrid directly why she didn't have an abortion.

Others have asked her why she didn't use birth control.

Others are wondering if it's going to cost the church more money.

How will she deliver the baby?

Can she go to the hospital if she can't leave the church?

But it's complex and it's not my decision in this case.

It's Ingrid's.

And I'm telling you, it is easy to be tempted to advise Ingrid, and it's not our place to do so.

And instead we commit to struggle together, apologize and take responsibility as a community to unlearn our patterns of dominance, like taking charge, rushing to decisions, and either/or thinking.

FRIEND: I just... INGRID: Para mí, esto es como una luz, un camino que se me abrió, porque estaba apagada realmente mi vida hace un año atrás.

Y, pues, la niña me, me ilusiona mucho, me da esa energía.

KELLY: The idea of justice is a lot more fun and easy than the actual doing it.

And it's not easy.

It's long, it's hard.

None of us wants her to stay here forever.

For the most part just some amazing, beautiful relationships that have been created.

Lots of friendships and a lot of advocacy work to work on her case.

Now, I don't pretend to think that everyone in this congregation is excited about this way of doing justice.

With a sanctuary guest, this is not work that can be done from the mind, from the intellect.

It has to be done from the heart.

SPEAKER: And for more than 140 years, we have been and continue to be... JEANETTE: Santuario no es un favor, es un acto de justicia social, de hacer un mundo mejor.

Pero siempre en cada congregación va a haber dos o tres personas que tienen esa mentalidad que tratan de hacernos la vida imposible.

No los están dejando que decidan qué hacer o cómo manejar su vida, pero sobre todo, todavía tienen esa mentalidad de superioridad, de: "Nosotros, los blancos, somos más inteligentes y, y debemos de decidir".

No, no, señores.

El color de la piel no importa, y creo que tenemos mucho más que enseñarles nosotros, la gente de color, la gente inmigrante, a ellos, que ellos a nosotros.

ARNIE: I think we all are aware of the truth that the wealth and the power in this country is built on immigrants.

So imagine you're standing in front of your church.

You're so glad to be there at a church where you're loved, where you're wanted.

But then you remember the land where your church is standing where you're standing belongs to everyone.

And someone comes and walks right past you into the church seeking safety.

They don't have to ask permission.

They don't even have to say “thank you” or “I'm grateful.” They're only claiming what is theirs.

JEANNETTE: Thank you, Arnie.

In this moment, I only have three weeks.

Three weeks to finish my stay remove.

And in this moment I need have one security space ready for me another time.

This administration maybe try arrest me after finish my stay.

And the same the last time maybe I need a... take sanctuary one week early.

Se me eriza la piel decirlo, porque, tal como nos trataron, no se puede más.

SPEAKER: And we are fundraising because not only in COVID, but living in sanctuary is a very challenging thing.

Ingrid is not able to work and there are still expenses for her family.

And so this money is gonna go for her so that she can live just like all of us are needing to do during this time.

Él, estar en un cuarto encerrados los cinco, eso no era vida para él o para mí, pa' todos.

Siento yo que ya lo superé, esa parte, pero aun así para mí es doloroso, porque supuestamente estoy yo luchando para mantener la familia unida, pero en esa parte ya se rompió, ¿me entiendes?

JEANETTE: Empezaron a adaptarse de cómo hacer la, los servicios vía Zoom.

Y, entonces, el pastor solo viene a veces y graba aquí.

Ahora el espacio está vacío, está solo, está frío.

A veces me quedo un rato yo aquí, así, a solas, conectando directamente con Dios.

Y, pues, diciendo, ¿no?, que me dé fuerzas, que, que me dé la sabiduría para seguir aguantando todo lo que está pasando, y ahora a solas, ahora a solas, que, que me toca estar en este lugar enorme.

La iglesia es un lugar enorme y... Y sola.

INGRID: Y ya son cuatro años.

Antes yo odiaba estar todo el tiempo en una casa.

¿Cómo he podido aguantar?

Quienes realmente me motivan a hacer esto son mis hijos.

Ellos son los motores.

JEANETTE: Y hoy estoy aquí, arriesgándome a mí misma, viajando de Denver a Delaware, para hacer una petición a la administración Biden.

Alrededor del país sabemos más de 150 personas que estamos acogidas a santuario.

Que el señor Biden tiene una responsabilidad muy grande, que tiene que hacer lo correcto, lo moral, lo humano, que no hicieron las otras administraciones, que a todos esos padres y madres que llevamos años refugiados en santuario nos den una solución.

Nearly 1,000 arrested in 24 hours.

REPORTER: She's being jailed at the Aurora ICE Processing Center, operated by the private prison company GEO Group.

REPORTER: A vigil was held outside of the ICE detention facility in Aurora tonight, in honor of Jeanette Vizguerra.

Her supporters argue she's being detained because she's been so outspoken about the Trump Administration's Immigration crackdown.

That's a message Vizguerra echoed while speaking to her supporters over the phone.
